    Years of experience seems too much. I've known 30 year old Directors at places. Went to business school with someone who was a SFA at Boeing for about 2 years. Hopped over to Microsoft as a Finance Mgr for about another 2 years. Now a Sr Finance Mgr. So from SFA to Sr Manager in roughly 5 years.

    FP&A is best suited to MBAs, in the MBA programs you learn a bit of everything. CPAs in FP&A are fairly common too.

    Great video. Would be good to know in plain English what the discount rate is. Is it supposed to be equal to the expected interest rate based on inflation or how do you assume the discount rate?

    • @jhoncadalin5887
      @jhoncadalin5887 8 дней назад

      Cost of capital, when you borrow there is interest rate, is the cost of capital worth the investment? NPV can answer that. Also discount rate can be another investment which gives a certain return, is the project you plan to do gives better outcome than the other project? NPV can answer that.

    Technically gross profit is NOT gross margin. Gross profit = Revenue-COGS. However, Gross margin= Gross profit/Revenue. Gross profit is the actual dollar amount, whereas gross profit Margin is a percentage.

      That is perhaps a textbook definition but in my 20 years across public, private, and PE (including working at portcos for the top PE firms)…. They are used interchangeably. If people want the percentage they will say what’s the gross profit % or gross margin %….

    Overall this is a great video tutorial to understand each component. The only thing that I want to call out is the formula written on MIX has an error. It was shown as "CY Units * (PY product price/unit - PY total price/unit) * (CY product % of total units - PT product % of total units)" In your excel example, your formula is actually doing this It was shown as "CY Units TOTAL * (PY product price/unit - PY total price/unit) * (CY product % of total units - PT product % of total units)"..................the CY Units should be written as CY Units TOTAL.

    This video has been very helpful in getting my analysis set up, but I'm finding I have more questions when comparing current year to prior year. The first thing that just looks wrong to me is my total mix impact on profitability is $2.4M while my mix impact on revenue is only $1.5M. That seems like it shouldn't be possible as the mix impact on profitability at the highest level is the mix impact on sales times the GP%, which is 67%. When diving deeper, I pulled one example that is indicative of several instances where mix impact on revenue is negative, so when I multiply that total by the GP%, it winds up being additive. For example, one product has a a PY ASP of $13.90 while the total PY ASP for all products is $57.17. The total CY units are 1,019,692 and the mix change is 1.33%. My mix impact on revenue is calculated as 1,019,962 *(13.90-57.17)*.0133 or ($585,748). When I take that times my PY GP% of 67%, I get a mix impact on profitability of ($389,673). When I roll all product lines up, I get the $1.5M mix impact to sales with $2.4M impact to profitability. The math works out, but it just looks wrong, because I keep thinking the mix impact to profitability should be less than the mix impact to sales as it is multiplied by the 67% GP%. Please help, my mind is in a blender at this point. Am I doing this correctly?

    A quick LinkedIn search of these FP&A Directors disproved the top 25 MBA education.

    • @austinbrown7574
      @austinbrown7574 6 месяцев назад

      lol, what do you even mean? You're saying you couldn't find a single director of FP&A that had a T25 MBA? I highly doubt that. Are you saying you don't "need" a T25 MBA to get the job? I don't think anyone was arguing that. In the case of the person the video described, however, they did not have a finance undergrad, so they probably used the MBA to career switch toward finance, which seems like a good use of the degree to me.

    • @ChickwnWing1493
      @ChickwnWing1493 6 месяцев назад

      @austinbrown7574 Yeah, I am saying that. A general search of FP&A directors did not show 1x T25 MBA. I specifically picked that out BECAUSE it was highlighted in the video describing a day in the life of a Finance Director. I'm not saying some don't have one. This video (unintentionally) describes the highest possible description and then talks about the T25 MBA. I'm being specific as someone WHO DOES have a T25 MBA that MOST FP&A do not have one and aspiring people should take the video's comment as an exception and not the rule. Not being malicious about my comment.

      @srujan00 I see that, too. Even 6 months later my comment is true. Just did another search of FP&A, this time in Atlanta. From Morgan Stanley to Raytheon. Their history and education are broad. My problem is there are people who would watch this and go "ahhh man, I got none of that." When in reality, it's not that hardcore. Again, the second the person mentioned a T25 and started talking about how the part-time MBAs were this, that, whatever...I remember how I thought that way and was WRONG.
